WHY & HOW TO USE NATURAL HAIR DYES - HENNA + INDIGO ?

HENNA and INDIGO both are plant-derived natural pigments used for hair dying since antiquities. Our HENNA & INDIGO powders are  100% Natural, Pure & Safe, ABSOLUTELY FREE from HARMFUL CHEMICALS like AMMONIA or PPD ! INDIGO with HENNA is a great replacement for modern chemical dyes if you are having a reaction or eczema caused by chemical color. Being natural, these herbal powders are really good for most hair types as well beneficial for your scalp! Additionally, these natural plant dyes act as mild relaxers on hair; it also gives your hair richness, shine & texture! In-fact, this mixture is considered safe for those with chemical sensitivities and during pregnancy or while nursing (A doctor should be consulted if you have any concerns).

OUTPUT COLOURS :

  • HENNA gives deep orange color (reddish tint) to the hair.
  • INDIGO hair dye gives deep blue color if used alone.
  • INDIGO mixed with HENNA gives medium brown to rich deep brown colour.
  • INDIGO applied over 'HENNA treated hair' gives a lush black colour.

For BROWN Color : HENNA + INDIGO

For Brown, auburn, chestnut, or chocolate hair coloring use a one step process by combining INDIGO with HENNA.

  1. Mix 100g. HENNA powder in a bowl with 1 cup acidic liquid like orange/lemon juice. Add 1/2 Cup to 1 Cup purified water till it's a yogurt like consistency.
  2. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and allow to sit for 12-24 hours until the dye has released. The longer HENNA paste sits and dye is released, the more red the outcome will be.
  3. Add INDIGO and cocoa butter in this HENNA paste, then stir in enough very hot water (just below boiling) for the mixture to have the approximate consistency of thick yogurt.
  4. Wait 10-15 minutes, you will see the green powder start to turn a deep purple black on top. When it's black, it's ready. Stir in any essential oils at this point.
  5. Rub petroleum jelly along your hairline, ears, and probably whole neck.
  6. Apply the 'HENNA+INDIGO' paste to dry or damp hair in sections, completely coating all the hair down to the roots. It’s easiest if you Start from the back and move forward. Wear gloves to protect your hands from being stained and drape an old towel over your shoulders to protect clothing.
  7. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or plastic wrap and allow to soak in for as long as you can stand (typ. 1-6 hours).  For the best results, you may leave it on overnight! (The longer you allow the paste to soak in the darker and richer the color will be!)
  8. Rinse the INDIGO off with cool water. (After an initial rinse out, adding conditioner to your hair will make the rest, rinse out actually very easily.)
  9. Do not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours, as the HENNA/INDIGO will need time to oxidize.
  10. Your INDIGO will be dark brown at first, and deepen to black over 2-4 days. Wait several days, and reapply if you see any missed spots, or if the INDIGO is not dark enough.
  11. CAUTION :  DO NOT BLEACH YOUR HAIR AFTER USING INDIGO ON IT, YOUR HAIR WILL TURN GREEN!
  12. Repeat this natural hair coloring process monthly for healthy, thick and shiny, dark hairs!

SPECIAL NOTES:

If you have grey hair that is dye resistant, you may have to try the 2-step method.
The amount of INDIGO that you add to the mix will depend upon the color that you are trying to achieve.  For a darker brown/auburn, try a ratio of 1 part HENNA to 2 parts INDIGO.

If you have trouble with the brown/auburn color staying in your hair, you can try adding the following:

  • Add salt to the warm water that you are mixing into the INDIGO.  About 1 tablespoon per 100 grams of powder that you are mixing.
  • Add AMLA to the INDIGO.  Mix the AMLA powder at a ratio of 1 part AMLA to 4 parts INDIGO.  Mix both powders together dry then add the warm water.

For BLACK Color : HENNA +> INDIGO

For Black and deep brown hair coloring use a 2 step process.  Apply HENNA to  your hair for a deep red base, then apply the blue INDIGO to create the rich deep browns and blacks.

STEP 1 : DYE YOU HAIR WITH HENNA

  3. Rub petroleum jelly along your hairline, ears, and probably whole neck so that the henna’s color does not get onto your skin!
  4.  Wearing gloves while you apply the henna paste will prevent your hands and nails from becoming stained.
  5. Take a small portion of your hair and then apply henna to that portion. Wind that portion of hair in one direction tightly.
  6. Take another portion of hair, apply henna, and wind it in the opposite direction. Do it for all small portions of the hair.
  7. Due to the winding, hair will stay in its place without clips.
  8. Then wear a shower cap to make sure the color is not transferred here and there.
  9. Keep the Henna for 3 hours and then remove it using Luke warm water. DO NOT USE SHAMPOO.
  10. Your white/gray hair will become orangish in color. But don’t worry, that’s where we use Indigo.

STEP 2 : APPLY INDIGO AFTER RINSING THE HENNA

If you have short hair then, take 100 grams of indigo, if you have medium length hair, then 200 grams of indigo will do and if you have long hair then you will need 300 grams of indigo. But if you have thick and curly then you may need more amount.

  1. Mix  indigo with warm water until it’s the consistency of thick yogurt. (Optional, add 1 teaspoon salt per 100 grams of indigo powder for darker colors)
  2. Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes, until the green powder start to turn a deep purple black on top. When it's black, it's ready. For a scent you may add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your paste mixture.
  3. Apply the indigo paste to dry or damp (previously hennaed) hair in sections, completely coating all the hair down to the roots. It’s easiest if you Start from the back and move forward. Wear gloves to protect your hands from being stained, drape an old towel over your shoulders to protect clothing.
  4. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or plastic wrap and allow to soak in for the following amount of time to achieve the desired colors:
  • BLACK - leave on for 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • BROWN - leave on for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how deep you want the brown to be.
  1. Then wash it off with luke warm water. After an initial rinse out, adding conditioner to your hair will make the rest rinse out actually very easily. Do not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours, as the henna/indigo will need time to oxidize.
  2. Indigo will take 1-2 days to oxidize completely and thus you will have amazing black hair.

SPECIAL NOTES:

If you have trouble with the indigo color staying in your hair, you can try adding the following:

  • Add salt to the warm water that you are mixing into the indigo.  About 1 tablespoon per 100 grams of powder that you are mixing.
  • Add amla to the indigo.  Mix the amla powder at a ratio of 1 part amla to 4 parts indigo.  Mix both powders together dry then add the warm water.
  • If you're trying to achieve a more auburn-brown color, try adding some henna to your indigo in the second step.

SIMPLE MIX FOR TURNING GREY HAIRS TO A LIGHT GOLDEN BROWN

This method is good for someone who is trying to blend their gray hairs without a drastic color change.

Mix equal parts of dry henna and indigo powder in bowl. Stir in enough just boiled water to make a paste the consistency of pudding.  Let the paste set, uncovered for 1 hour.  Apply paste to freshly washed hair and wrap head in plastic wrap, then place a shower cap over the top of that.  Allow paste to remain on the hair for 30 minutes, then rinse it out.
